2024 Projects Requesting Funding

Project 1: Howard Lake Rd/Upper Klickitat Floodplain Restoration, Sponsor: Yakama Nation

Continuing on a project from the 2023 Grant Round, the Howard Lake Project is seeking $400,000 in SRFB dollars to further their efforts in restoring 40 acres of Floodplain on the upper reaches of the Klickitat. The project entails the removal the titular "Howard Lake Rd," along with the removal of two bridges that cross the Klickitat. Removing the roadways will significantly improve pinch points on the Klickitat that prevent floodplain flow and development. Additionally, the project will improve the floodplain through in-channel work with the placement of large woody debris (LWD) and beaver dam analogs (BDA). This project is critical to the restoration of the upper Klickitat.

Project 2: Upper Snyder Creek Final Restoration Design, Sponsor: Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group (MCFEG)

The Snyder Creek project is one-step in an ongoing and historical effort to restore the area surrounding and encompassing the former Klickitat Valley Sawmill in Klickitat, WA. Previous work has been done restoring lower Snyder Creek, where the physical structures of the mill still remain. Upper Snyder Creek is located on what used to be the mills log sorting yard and mill pond. The project seeks to conduct a final design to restore a highly incised floodplain that has degraded into ditch-like conditions. This design will be implemented in a future project, and is seeking roughly $223,000 in SRFB dollars.

Project 3: Klickitat River Riparian Acquisition, Sponsor: Columbia Land Trust

This project seeks roughly $332,000 in riparian dollars to acquire nearly 40 acres on the mid-Klickitat. This acquisition is one of the last remaining efforts to acquire what's dubbed the former "haul road," a reach between the Little Klickitat and Leidl Bridge, and is an important step to conserving this reach of the Klickitat. This parcel is seeking funding through the new riparian funding mechanism, and thus the parcel is 98% riparian. Through Columbia Land Trust, this acquired parcel would still be open to the public for recreation purposes.
